28 - What is Love?

What is love? No, I'm not talking about the song by Haddaway or TWICE. In recognition of Valentine's Day this next week and the many conversations I have with clients about this topic, let's talk about love and what it is.

Here's a brief rundown. There are seven different kinds of love according to the Greek language, but we're looking at three of them because that was all I found when I was looking up this information while recording:

1. Eros - Romantic love
2. Philia - Love among friends
3. Agape - Unconditional love

There are also 8 types of love according to Robert Sternberg's Triangular Theory of Love that are based on the three vertices of passion, intimacy, and commitment:

1. Non-love - None of the three are represented
2. Infatuation - Only passion is present
3. Liking - Only Intimacy is present
4. Empty Love - Only commitment is present
5. Romantic Love - Passion and intimacy
6. Fatuous Love - Passion and commitment
7. Companionate Love - Intimacy and commitment
8. Consummate Love - Passion, intimacy, and commitment
